Musings of a Museum Fanatic: Photo Magnets

Photo Magnets

I finally got my butt in gear and started on my once every other month DIY project 101 task!!

Photo Magnets

You need:

Large Glass Gems, Clear (I was able to find them for a killer deal at Michael's)

Glue (I'm guessing craft glue is the best but mine didn't work so Elmer's it was!)
Photos or clip art print out
Magnets
Scissors
Pencil
Paintbrush

The most difficult part was getting the photos the right size and after a few mess ups I ended up going with the clip art this time around!  It was easy with a lot of the clip art since they were already in circular form I was able to eyeball them unlike the photographs.
I ended up printing out two sets of them with two different sizes.  Unfortunately I still didn't make most of them small enough!  Some made the cut though : )  I will probably use the clip art sizes that worked to make the photographs, that will hopefully make things easier for sizing.

Next you place the glass gem on top of the paper and trace around it with a pencil.

Cut out all the little circles you just made.  Ultimately I ended up using my little cuticle scissors since they were curved and much smaller.  They worked out really well.

Next put a little bit of your glue onto a paper plate or newspaper.  It makes it waaaay easier to use that way.  Paint a thin layer onto the back of the gem.

Press your cut out onto the back, lining up how you cut it previously.

**I have seen on some other examples of photo magnets that when they use craft glue there ends up being air bubbles so you need to be sure to press really hard to get them all flattened**

Do the same thing for the magnet. Paint a thin film on the back and press onto the gem.  I ended up turning them all over and putting a thick cookbook on top of them to make sure they fused properly.

Et voila!
